Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Access My W-2?

All tax information, including your annual W-2 statements, can be found in Colleague Employee Self Service > Tax Information.

What happens to my health coverage when I retire?

You may be eligible to participate in the Retired Group of the State Health Benefits Program.

a) If you have accumulated 25 years of pension credit in the State system, you will be eligible for free medical coverage upon retirement, in accordance with the provisions established by the New Jersey Division of Pensions & Benefits. This free coverage is extended to your spouse and eligible dependents, if applicable. Upon your death, the coverage is continued at no cost for your spouse and eligible dependents.

b) If you do not have 25 years of pension credit, you may join the Retired Group of the State Health Benefits Program at your own expense. Monthly premiums are generally deducted from your monthly retirement checks for PERS retirees. ABP retirees are billed monthly. [To see Fact Sheet 11 click here.]

Will my medical coverage be different in retirement than it is as an active employee?

State law requires that anyone who is enrolled in the Retired Group of the SHBP and is eligible for Medicare must enroll in both Part A and Part B of the Medicare program in order to be covered under the SHBP. The SHBP cannot pay for benefits which should have been paid by Medicare.

So, when you retire and are age 65, Medicare becomes the primary payer of medical benefits. Your coverage under SHBP is the secondary payer of benefits.

If you retire before age 65, the SHBP will cover you in the same manner as it did prior to retirement.

What are Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B?

Medicare is the Federal health insurance program for persons aged 65 and over, and certain disabled persons. Medicare has two parts: Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance).

Part A of Medicare pays some of the costs of hospitalization and limited nursing home care. Part B primarily covers doctors' fees, most outpatient hospital services, and certain related services.

What happens to my life insurance upon retirement?

If you retire with 10 or more years of service credit in the retirement system and are at least age 60, the amount of your group life insurance will be reduced when you retire according to the terms of the retirement system in which you are enrolled. You have the option to purchase an individual non-group policy with Prudential by contacting a Prudential agent before 31 days following your termination of employment.
