FLORAL Design
Floral Design Certificate
To satisfy the requirements for the Mercer County Community College Center for Continuing Studies Floral Design Certificate, students must:
- Complete the Basic Floral Design class (Those with work or classroom-related experience may receive a waiver for this course from the instructor.)
- Complete 10 elective courses, for 11 total classes completed.
- Basic Floral Design must complete 11 electives. All 11 courses are required for the Floral Design Certificate.
- Final Floral Presentation: Present a portfolio of your work, a current resume, and one completed floral design to three MCCC panelists at the culmination of the entire program
Whether you are an aspiring floral designer that is looking to start your career, considering making advancements in your profession, or looking to open your own business, enrolling in our certificate program is the ideal pathway. You will train with an industry expert while refining your skills for employment or business ownership opportunities.
To ensure enough resources, no one will be registered beyond seven days prior to class.

Attention: Registration for classes may close seven (7) days prior to the start date depending on enrollment numbers. The Center for Continuing Studies also suggests not purchasing textbooks until seven (7) days prior to the start date of a class to ensure the class is running.
Basic Floral Design
Do you love flowers and have always wanted to learn how to create amazing flower arrangements? During this introductory class, we will discuss the Principles and Elements of Floral Design. Using industry standard techniques, you will design a vased floral, a foam based floral and a ribbon bow. The skills taught in this class are the foundations for all the elective floral design courses.

Cascading Floral Wedding Bouquets
A bride’s day is not complete without the beautiful shower of her floral bouquet. Using two different techniques (bouquet foam holder and chicken wire hand tied), learn how to create two cascading floral bouquets which will be yours to keep after the class.

Tropical Triangle Floral Designs
The tropical regions of the world offer some of the most unique and beautiful flowers for design use. Using a triangular geometric form, learn how to work with these vibrant tropical flowers.

Funeral Floral Designs
Life celebrations are beautifully complimented by flowers. In this class, learn how to design an easel spray and urn wreath to serve as wonderful tributes to a loved one. Both floral pieces created will be yours to take home at the end of the class.

Floral Designs to Accent Cakes
Fresh flowers on a cake enhance the visual impact of this statement piece at an event. Do you want to learn which flowers are safe to use and how to apply them to a cake? Using a small tiered cake, we will discuss appropriate flower choices and you will design several cake toppers with side floral accents.

Hand Tied Wedding Bouquets
Inspired by European floral design, we will be using the spiral hand tied design style to create beautiful bouquets full of texture and interest. This elegant floral form is designed to enhance the romantic silhouette of the ladies in the bridal party

Crescent and Hogarth Curve Floral Design
Using the similar geometric forms of Crescent and Hogarth (or “S” shape) Curve, you will learn to design floral arrangements recognized for their beauty in graceful curves. Inspired by the crescent shape of the moon and the elegant curves of the female body, these florals are very creative artistic designs.

Organic Floral Design
The “green” scene has worked its way into the feel of floral design. Students will create earthy, simplistic and natural florals using this trendy design style. Industry standard techniques will be used. Students will be able to take their creations home to enjoy.

Do you love the look of mixed materials accenting your long table? Learn how to mix candles, props and florals to create a cohesive tablescape to accent your dinner table. Students will create one tablescape to take home for their table.

PRICING FLOWERS FOR PROFIT
Want to turn your hobby into a profit making entrepreneurship? This class will discuss buying techniques, creating floral recipes, pricing strategies, delivery and set up fees and contracts. Pricing should not be guess work. Understand your costs and learn to price accordingly. Bring your calculator and learn industry standard techniques.

Horizontal and Vertical Floral Designs
Using the opposite geometric forms of horizontal and vertical, students will create florals with very dramatic effects. Students will be able to create two different florals with very dramatic effects. Industry standards will be used. Students will be allowed to take their creations home.

Armature Based Floral Design
Man-made and natural materials are used to create dynamic structures that showcase and support flowers in these stunning floral designs. Learn techniques to construct two armature shapes. The beautiful flowers in your design may fade but the armature can be used again and again.

Corsages, Boutonnieres, and Hair Florals
Flowers make the perfect accent for your special event or photoshoot and can help build upon your theme from romantic to whimsical. In this class, you will explore several different industry standard construction techniques, including wiring and gluing, to design these hand-crafted florals.

Create beautiful, compact floral patterns using the design technique of pave’. Borrowing this idea from the jewelry craftsmen, these sophisticated designs have clean lines, unique forms and strong color combinations.

Join us for this exciting group class to create an exquisite hanging floral chandelier. Learn the mechanics of designing these large luxury pieces to grace the ceiling of a tent or entranceway. Students will work together to prepare, hang and design this piece

Master class-Elegant event table florals
Prerequisite Class: Basic Floral Design
The first class in our Master Series will concentrate on elegant table florals. This class will involve the students working together to design a 6' long horizontal elevated centerpiece, a flowing 12' garland with floral accents and add candle accents to finish off the look. Elevate your design skills with this great group class.

Master class - StairCase Decor
Prerequisite Class: Basic Floral Design
Let your bride make a beautiful entrance up a venue's staircase. Learn how to design and create a staircase that will "wow" your bride's family and friends. Master Classes allow our students to work together to design one larger floral display. We will be using chicken wire mechanics to design this floral installation.

Master class- Decorative Arch Ceremony Backdrop
Prerequisite Class: Basic Floral Design
This master class will cover the design mechanics for a beautiful, lush arch ceremony backdrop. You will work with your classmates as a team to create this piece. We will also work on different chair decor techniques, as we complete the ceremony scene. This is perfect for your portfolio expansion. Come ready for a fast paced and fun filled class.

Master class - Sweetheart Table Floral Display with Backdrop
Prerequisite Class: Basic Floral Design
The Sweetheart Table is the focus of the reception. Everyone looks to the couple, as they glow in the joy they have found in each other. Learn decorating techniques to make this table stand out. We will be adding candle and floral accents to the table area. A backdrop with fabric swags and hanging orbs and flowers will also be designed to complete the look.

Final floral presentation
Successful completion of this course, you will earn you a Certificate of Study in Floral Design. Through one-on-one guidance from the instructor, you will create an industry centered Resume, professional Portfolio and creatively design one fresh floral of your choice. These requirements must be presented to a panel of reviewers representing the Horticulture and Continuing Studies Departments of MCCC. The presentation is scheduled depending on the availability of all parties.
