SEVICE LEARNING PROJECT SELECTION
Please select two of the following projects.
- Select an agency that is considered to practice applied
sociology – examples (The Salvation Army, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Food
Pantry, etc.) Visit one of these agencies and write a short critique on
the visit as it relates to material learned from chapter 1.
- Attend a cultural activity of a different ethnic or racial
group apart from your own and write a short paper on your impression of the
experience. (Reference chapter 2).
- Visit a local mall – an area where a large amount of people
congregate. Create a chart that lists Hall’s “distance zones”.
Walk around the mall for an hour to observe human interaction. List the
interactions observed under the proper distance zones. Then summarize
the findings – Which distance zones were most represented? Which were
least represented? Why? (Reference chapter 4)
- Attend two sporting events – one male and one female.
From your observations of the two events, what are the similarities and
differences in ways that coaches coach, fans support,
and the sports media cover male and female athletics. (Reference chapter
8)
