Youngsters Get Creative in MCCC’s Tomato Patch Summer Workshops

West Windsor, N.J. – There are still spaces available in the second session of Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC’s) Tomato Patch Visual and Performing Arts Workshops for students entering grades 5 to 7. The session runs Mondays through Thursdays from July 25 to August 11 and concludes with an Evening of the Arts for family and friends on August 10 and 11.

The program is held at Kelsey Theatre and other areas of MCCC’s
West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

According to M. Kitty Getlik, artistic director of Kelsey Theatre and director of Tomato Patch, the workshops are designed for “theater kids” and young visual artists to spread their wings.

Children have the opportunity to explore musical theater, children’s theater, jazz and tap dance, stage combat, computer art, painting, drawing, cartooning and anime, hip hop, vocal ensemble, comedy, music video and web video.  All classes are taught by arts professionals.

Students select an area of concentration, as well as electives, that give them a range of activities in the arts. New this year are classes in stage makeup techniques and clowning.

“The kids spend three weeks with us and we see them blossom,” Getlik said. "Many who start out in our session for grades 5 to 7 move on to the program for older students. A number of our campers have gone on to perform on stage in high school, college and at the professional level.”
