West Windsor, N.J. – Perry Award nominations for the 2013-14 theater season were recently announced by the New Jersey Association of Community Theaters (NJACT), with shows at MCCC's Kelsey Theatre earning 12 nominations.
Kelsey Artistic Director M. Kitty Getlik is gratified that a number of production teams, as well as actors have been recognized with nominations.
“Nominations for Perry Awards are very competitive and it’s a great affirmation for Kelsey Theatre companies to be among the group," Getlik said. "We are fortunate to have such a talented pool of actors, musicians and backstage crew members who work tirelessly to share their talents and their love of the theater with our community.”
The blockbuster "Les Miserables" garnered four nominations, followed by "Shrek the Musical" with three, "Big River" and "A Flea in Her Ear,"each with two, and "Peter Pan" with one.
Three Kelsey actors were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical: Playful Theatre Productions’ Elio Edward Lleo for his role as Javert in “Les Miserables”; The Pennington Players’ James W. Guido for his role as Huck Finn in “Big River”; and Playful Theatre Productions’ Michael Scibilia for his role as Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.” Other acting nominations include The Yardley Players’ Joe Zedeny for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play for “A Flea in Her Ear” and Maurer Productions OnStage’s Amanda Mancino for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for “Shrek the Musical.”
Among the nominees for production staff are: Playful Theatre Productions’ Robert Terrano and Starrika McCloud for Outstanding Lighting Design of a Musical for “Les Miserables”; The Yardley Players’ Louisa Muder and Marge Swider for Outstanding Costume Design of a Play for “A Flea in Her Ear”; Maurer Productions OnStage’s Dotti Farina and John Maurer for Outstanding Properties of a Musical for “Shrek the Musical”; Playful Theatre Productions’ Shannon Ferrara for Outstanding Music Direction for “Les Miserables”; The Pennington Players’ Jen Greg for Outstanding Production of a Musical for “Big River”; The Yardley Players’ Christine Szemis for Outstanding Stage Manager of a Musical for “Peter Pan”; and Maurer Production OnStage’s Diana Gilman Maurer for “Shrek the Musical.”
Each year approximately 200 shows around the state receive roughly 400 reviews to determine those most deserving of recognition in more than 30 categories. The awards will be announced at the annual Perry Awards Gala on Sept. 21.
