Muslim Student Association Brightens Holiday Season for TASK Clients

West Windsor, N.J. – An act of generosity by students in Mercer County Community College's (MCCC's) Muslim Student Association has given clients at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) a few more reasons to smile this holiday season.

On Nov. 21, the students traveled to the Trenton nonprofit, which provides meals and services to those in need. Their goal was to distribute approximately 170 "Blessing Bags" filled with donated items including hygiene products, socks and snacks.

The idea for the project began in September and included multiple steps: soliciting for donations, compiling the bags, and reaching out to TASK staff members to coordinate the distribution.

"This is something we talked about and wanted to do," said Association President Tarek Elsharawy. "With all of us helping, we were able to assemble all the bags in less than an hour.”

Elsharawy expressed the students' gratitude for all the donations they received, including a substantial contribution of personal care products from an area dermatologist’s office.

The association's secretary/ treasurer, Rayana Dawarzai, said the most satisfying part was meeting the TASK clients and giving out the bags.

“We distributed every single bag. People were so grateful to have such useful items, all things they really needed.  When we were all done, I realized we had made something special happen. It was very rewarding,” Dawarzai said.
