Using the Databases

Unlike general web searching, with databases you may limit your searches. Some commonly used options include limiting:

  • To just full-text articles
  • By date or date range
  • To just scholarly (aka peer reviewed) sources

Though the principles of searching the databases is similar from database to database, the interface (screen layout) varies with each database company.

Two of the largest database companies are Proquest and EBSCOhost. Let's take a look at their interfaces.

Using Other Databases

  • The principles for obtaining fulltext and/or scholarly/peer reviewed articles as well as limiting searches by date range are very similar in other databases. These options should be available at the opening search screen. NOTE: the JSTOR database contains scholarly/peer reviewed information exclusively. Hence, this database has no option to select scholarly/peer reviewed articles.

A Few Comments about MLA Citations

  • The principles for obtaining MLA citations is similar in other databases as well. NOTE: for a few databases, the citation information appears at the bottom of the article.
  • Though databases do supply MLA formatted citations, it is still the responsibility of you, the user, to confirm that the citations are indeed completely correct. Do not blindly accept citations from databases (or from other web based citation generating tools).
  • The MLA citation formatting was revised in the late spring of 2016 to the MLA to the current 8th edition. For a small munber of databases, they are currently still supplying the older 7th edition formatting. Check with your instructor to find out if she/he will accept the older MLA formatting in your work.
