9-28-09 WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- Mercer County Community College is offering basic skills training in communications, computer operations, mathematics and English as a second language to employees at businesses throughout New Jersey.
The training is offered at no charge to employers, thanks to the third year of the New Jersey Business and Industry Associations (NJBIA) Basic Skills Training Program (Basic Skills III), a partnership between the State of New Jersey, the New Jersey Community College Consortium, and the NJBIA.
Available free of charge to participating companies, the training does not require complicated paperwork or financial disclosures. Employers must pay their employees their regular wages while they are in training. There are no minimum participation requirements. Businesses can enter just one employee for training or a large group of employees. The Community College Consortium is coordinating the classes, and participants are pooled with other companies. This allows small numbers of employees from several different companies to receive training close to their places of work.
Classes include basic computer operations (Microsoft), mathematics and measurement, verbal, written and customer-service communications, and English as a second language. The training is provided by the states 19 community colleges at 63 locations. Classes can be conducted on-site if enough employees at one location are able to participate.
Basic Skills III is made possible with a $1 million training grant from the NJ Department of Labor & Workforce Development, which also supplied training funds to support the first two years of the program.
