MCCC and Mercer County Commemorate 9-11

WEST WINDSOR, N.J.: Before a gathering of dignitaries, guests, faculty, staff and students at Mercer County Community College on Sept. 10, John Kennedy Jr, an instructor with the Fire Department of New York and the Mercer County Fire Academy, related his personal experiences of September 11, 2001.

In a moving speech, he described many of his close friends who were killed that day trying to save others. “These were special men. We are a little less safe without these men on the watch.” Traveling with other rescue personnel up the turnpike late that afternoon, he described seeing the smoke rising from what was the World Trade Center.

The event was hosted by the college and the County of Mercer. “This was a day that brought the fight right to our backyard,” said County Executive Brian Hughes. “Here in America we lost something to experience terrorism to this extent. It brought the country together like never before.”

Danielle Allison of Lawrenceville, a music major at MCCC, sang the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America, receiving many accolades after the ceremony for her talent. Reverend Robert Wittik gave an invocation. “We shed tears and recognize common bonds of grief,” he said.

MCCC President Patricia C. Donohue welcomed dignitaries, including freeholders and members of the MCCC Board of Trustees. “We are here not only to honor those lost in 2001, but also to celebrate the resilience of those who stepped up to offer support.”

Closing the ceremony MCCC Board Chair Rev. William E. Coleman Jr. said, “We honor the dignity of those lost, and we celebrate our freedoms. Remembering is not a choice, but an obligation.”
