MCCC Professor Fran Davidson Honored by Students

During their Honors Symposium on Dec. 10, students in Mercer County Community College’s Honors Poetry class presented a surprise tribute to their professor, Fran Davidson of Cranbury.

They presented her with a plaque which is now installed in the MCCC Library, engraved with:  “As our heartfelt token of appreciation the Honors class of 2011 dedicates the British Victorian Poetry Section to Professor Fran Davidson in recognition of her love for poetry and for her students.” The plaque marks a collection of new books on Victorian poetry also donated by the students in her honor.

Student Kate Kingsley hangs the plaque in the MCCC library.

According to Professor Davidson, this was a special group of students.  “They were so interested in one another’s learning, and so involved with the class as a whole. It was a great experience for me as a teacher to see that kind of camaraderie.”

One student spoke for her classmates. “It’s Professor Davidson’s generosity of spirit we want to reflect. We want to show our appreciation for everything she has given us this year. She created an environment where we felt safe not only to explore poetry but to explore ourselves.”

Professor Davidson praised the Honors Program and its coordinators, Professors Carol Bork and Gianna Durso Finley, and the opportunities it provides through challenging work and supportive faculty.

During the event approximately 50 Mercer Honors Program students, and their professors, gathered at the Student Center to learn from each other as they presented special projects and assignments from their busy semester.

MCCC offered 11 Honors classes this fall.  The list included two English Composition classes, Fantasy Literature, Introduction to Poetry, Introduction to Psychology, Macroeconomics, Moral Choices, Sociology (Social Problems), U.S. History to 1865, Women in Europe Since 1500, and Women in Literature.  The Mercer Honors Program is coordinated by Associate English Professor, Dr. Carol Bork, and Sociology Professor, Dr. Gianna Durso-Finley.

Several accomplished alumni returned for the event, including Sara Gatling, a 2010 graduate who now attends Columbia University, and Susana Sánchez, a 2009 graduate who transferred to Hampshire College with a full scholarship, graduated in May 2011, and is now applying to graduate schools.
