MCCC to Offer EPA/HUD-Approved Building Renovation Training
West Windsor, NJ — Beginning February 9, Mercer County Community College (MCCC) will offer training courses for New Jersey contractors who work on renovation, repair and painting projects that may disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes and buildings. The training meets federal and state requirements, and is offered in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Business & Industry Association.
Through the New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New Jersey Department of Community Affairs have approved New Jersey’s community colleges as the accredited training providers for this U.S. Environmental Protection Agency/Department of Housing and Urban Development (EPA/HUD) renovation, repair and painting program.
Contractors must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Firms must use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved providers to follow lead-safe work practices. Renovators include renovation contractors, maintenance workers in multi-family housing, painters, and other specialty trades.
The NJ Department of Community Affairs is subsidizing the training through the state’s community colleges to reduce training costs for contractors and their workers. The training offers four certificates to attendees in one combined 20-hour class for the subsidized tuition rate of $190 per person plus $72 for text and materials. Certificates are awarded upon successful completion and will be distributed after the conclusion of the course.
The combined package includes:
• EPA Model Renovator Initial Certificate
• EPA Dust Sampling Technician Certificate
• NJ DCA Rules & Regulations Certificate
• OSHA Hazardous Communications Certificate
By completing the following courses being offered by MCCC, students will earn all four certificates:
February 9: Renovator & NJ Regulations, 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (9 hours)
February 10: Dust Wipe Technician, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (8 hours)
February 11: OSHA, HazCom, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (3 hours)
