A Chocolate Affair to Celebrate Tenth Anniversary of
MCCC's Physical Therapist Assistant Program

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- Is eating chocolate a form of therapy? Mercer County Community College's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students, alumni and friends think so. They plan to celebrate the program's tenth anniversary with "A Chocolate Affair" on Thursday, April 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the college's Conference Center atrium.

According to program coordinator Barbara Behrens, who will deliver a brief history, the event's focus will be on celebrating with successful alumni while raising funds for PTA student scholarships. Professionals who provide sites for clinical training at hospitals and clinics will join the college community and other guests.

Students in MCCC's culinary programs will be baking some of the chocolate treats, and will offer a selection for sale. The students are currently at work on the design of themed chocolate tortes representing a variety of college programs. A contest for "Favorite Torte" will result in the crowning of the collective "Best in Show."

Chocolate will also be flowing from a fountain complete with fruit, pretzels and cookies for dipping. More treats will be provided by area shops, including Carl Fischer Candies, Thomas Sweet Ice Cream and Chocolate, and Carella's Hallmark Chocolates. In addition to candy or product donations for auction that evening, area businesses are invited to sponsor a torte for $100 or to become a donor for $50 to $500. Primal Pictures has donated approximately $1,500 worth of educational software to be auctioned off that evening. The company specializes in anatomical software products.

Mercer's Physical Therapist Assistant program was founded in 1996 at the request of an area physical therapy provider who identified a need for this type of program in central New Jersey. The program offers an associate degree and prepares students for the state licensing boards. All of the program's graduates who have passed the boards have found jobs in their field within six months of graduation. The program is a popular second career choice for more mature students looking for a career change. The Conference Center at Mercer is located on the college's West Windsor Campus, at 1200 Old Trenton Road. Tickets are $20 per person until April 5, then $22.
