WEST WINDSOR – Former Mercer County Community College (MCCC) pitcher Heath Fillmyer is one step closer to the big leagues, having been named to the 40-man roster for the Oakland Athletics.
Fillmyer was added to the roster in anticipation of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 14. Under Rule 5, any minor league baseball player who was drafted out of college in 2014 or earlier – 2013 or earlier for high school players – can be selected by another team if they are not on the 40-man roster. In addition, a player must be on the 40-man roster to be eligible to play at the major league level.
Fillmyer spent the 2017 season pitching for Oakland’s Double-A affiliate, the Midland RockHounds. In his 37 starts last season, Fillmyer posted a 3.29 earned run average, averaging nearly seven strikeouts per nine innings pitched. He finished the season with an 11-5 record with 115 strikeouts and only 51 walks over 149.2 innings.
As a starting pitcher for the Vikings in 2014, Fillmyer helped lead the team to an appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II World Series. His post-season honors that year included Region 19 Player of the Year, NJCAA Pitcher of the Year, and First-Team All-American. He was selected in the fifth round by the Oakland A’s in the 2014 MLB Draft.
