West Windsor, NJ-Mercer men’s soccer (4-2-1) got a big win beating #7 ranked Essex 5-0, giving the Wolverines their first loss of the season. Sophomore Jesse Van Den Berg (Rhoon, Netherlands/Portus Groene Hart) had a hat trick and assist to lead MCCC in the win. Freshman Alehandro Sina (Belluno, Italy/V. Follzolo De Rossi) added a goal and assist in the game the Mustangs dominated from the start. Sophomore Emilio Murguza (Madrid, Spain/GSD Las Rozas) had a goal and Corso Casteletti (Florence, Italy/Poggio Imperiale Florence) had an assist.
Van Den Berg scored five minutes into the game off an assist from Casteletti. Van Den Berg followed this up with another goal just two minutes later. Sina scored the Mustangs’ third goal off an assist from Van Den Berg. Murguruza scored Mercer’s fourth goal off an assist from Sina with four minutes remaining in the first half to give Mercer a 4-0 lead at the half. Van Den Berg capped off a great game with his third goal of the match with just over a minute left in the match.
Freshman goalkeeper Yoshi Ando (Yokosuka, Japan/Joetsu High School) had four saves in the shutout win.
Mercer next hosts Ocean County (4-0) on Thursday, September 17th at 4:00 PM.
