Men's Tennis Player Miller Named 1st Team All-Region and All-Conference

7/21/2023

Mercer freshman men’s tennis player Peyton Miller (Ewing, NJ/Ewing HS) earned 1 st Team All-Region 19 honors following a win at 1 st Singles in the Region 19 Championship hosted by Mercer at Mercer County Park.  Miller also earned 1 st Team All-GSAC (Garden State Athletic Conference) honors for having the most wins at 1 st Singles during regular season matches.

Miller went 7-3 in his regular season matches at 1 st Singles, capturing the GSAC title at that flight.  In the Region 19 Championship, Miller defeated Ocean’s John Willis 6-1, 6-3 to become Region 19 Champion at 1 st Singles.  Willis, who Miller defeated, was Runner-Up at 1 st Singles at the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) National Championship and named an All-American.  Miller also beat RCSJ Gloucester’s Rockland Caselli 6-4, 7-5 in the Semifinals.  Caselli was an All-American and National Champion at 1 st Doubles this spring.

Unfortunately due to an elbow injury, Miller was unable to travel and compete in the NJCAA Men’s Tennis National Championship held in Oxford, Georgia May 12 th-14th. Miller qualified individually for the National Tournament based on his 1 st place finish at 1 st Singles in the Region 19 Championship.

The Vikings went 1-7 this spring, competing with just four players.  This meant the Vikings would forfeit three flights every match, putting Mercer at a great disadvantage each match. Miller was joined by sophomores Areeb Khan (Trenton, NJ/Nottingham) and Mahmoud El Etriby (Monmouth Junction, NJ/South Brunswick HS) and freshman Jack Wolfarth (Ewing, NJ/Ewing HS) on the Vikings roster this spring.

Region 19 proved to be very competitive this season nationally with RCSJ Gloucester finishing 2 nd at the National Championship and Ocean County College taking third place.  Andy Stoll completed his second year as Head Men’s Tennis coach for the Vikings.  Stoll was assisted by Barb Pleva and Marc Vecchiolla.
