Mercer softball opened the 2025 NJCAA Division II World Series with an impressive 9-2 win over WVU Potomac State. The Vikings entered the World Series as the #17 seed with a 42-4 record. WVU Potomac State was 39-4 and the #16 seed.
Freshman pitcher Jozalyn Sheipe-Warthen (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) had an outstanding game, not just on the mound, but at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two triples and four RBIs. Sophomore Kelci O’Dell (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) went 2 for 3 with two RBIs snd sophomore Emily Wyzykowski (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) added an RBI.
The Vikings found ways to get on base and force the Catamounts to get make plays, which resulted in four errors. Sheipe-Warthen limited the Catamounts to five hits and two runs. Heading into the World Series, WVU Potomac State had the top team batting average in the country at .451.
Mercer faces a tough task in the winner’s brackets as they will take on the top team in the country, St. Johns River State College, who is 52-9 on the season. But as the Vikings showed WVU Potomac State yesterday, you never know what can happen if you put the ball into play.
