MCCC Softball Beats Del Tech Twice to Win Region 19 Championship

 

 

 

This weekend, Mercer Softball captured its first Region Championship since 2018, beating Del Tech twice in the double elimination tournament.

 

The Vikings opened the Tournament with a 5-1 win vs Lackawanna.  Sophomore Emily Wyzykowski (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) had a home run and 2 RBIs and freshman pitcher Jozalyn Sheipe-Warthen (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) only allowed one earned run in her 23rd win of the season.

 

Mercer moved onto the Winners bracket where they faced top seeded Del Tech and won that game 9-5 on Friday.  Wyzykowski went 5 for 5 in the win with 2 RBIs and sophomore Cadence Mapes-Klemic (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) was 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBIs.  Freshman Stella Logan (Trenton, NJ/Allentown) had 3 3 RBIs in the win and Sheipe-Warthen got her 24th win of the season.

 

Mercer advanced to the Region Championship where they faced Del Tech again, as Del Tech beat Lackawanna 11-3 in the elimination game.  Mercer lost 5-4 vs Del Tech in eight innings, forcing another rematch in the if necessary game of the double elimination tournament. 

 

Mercer was able to beat Del Tech for the third time in the tournament 9-2 to win the Region title.  Sophomore Madison Jobes (Roebling, NJ/Florence Twp. Memorial), who has been splitting catching and pitching duties all season, struck out four in seven innings in her 13th win of the season.  Wyzykowski went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Sheipe-Warthen had 2 RBIs.  Mapes-Klemic went 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI and sophomore Kelci O’Dell (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) added two RBIs in the win. 

 

Sheipe-Warthen was named the Region 19 Tournament MVP. Sheipe-Warthen, who is 24-2 on the season, threw 22 innings in the Region Tournament, going 2-1 with a 2.75 ERA.  Head Coach Ryan Zegarski was named the Region 19 Coach of the Year.

 

With the win, MCCC advances to the Atlantic A District Championship, hosted by Mercer.  The Vikings will face Cleveland Community College from Shelby, North Carolina.  The winner of the best of three championship series will advance to the NJCAA Division II National Championship.

 

Cleveland CC is 34-12 on the season and was the Region 10 Runner-Up, losing to #6 ranked Louisburg College 7-4 in the Region 10 Championship.

 

The District Championship will be held, Friday, May 9th with the if necessary game taking place at noon on Saturday, May 10th.  Game 1 on Friday will take place at 12:00 PM and Game 2 at 2:30 PM.  (Schedule subject to change due to weather)
