Mercer softball advanced to the District Championship following a dramatic Region 19 Tournament. The Vikings were Region 19 Runner-Ups and the top two teams from the Region 19 Tournament move on to play in Region 10 with the chance to advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series. Two teams will advance to the World Series from the District Championship.
The Vikings opened the Region 19 Playoffs as the #1 seed but lost their first game vs #4 seed Salem 0-6, facing elimination from the double elimination tournament. Mercer bounced back with a 8-0 win vs Lackawanna in an elimination game Friday and would take on Salem CC again in another elimination game Saturday. The Vikings beat Salem 10-8 to advance to the Region 19 Championship game vs Del Tech.
Mercer beat Del Tech 13-6 in the first game of the Region Championship, but lost to Del Tech in the if necessary game (double elimination format) 9-11 in eight innings.
The good news for the Vikings is that the top two teams from Region 19 advance to the District Championship, keeping Mercer’s hopes of reaching the NJCAA World Series alive. The Vikings will travel to Region 10 and take on Louisburg College, the #1 seed from Region 10, who is currently ranked #5 in NJCAA Division II softball. Louisburg is 50-6 on the season. The format for the District Championship is a best of three series.
