MCCC Men's Tennis Finishes as National Runner-Ups

Mercer men’s tennis finished as National Runner-Ups at the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  The Vikings fell just short of a national title, losing to Oxford Emery, who won their ninth straight national title.  Mercer finished with 16.5 points while Oxford won the title with 20 points.

Although Mercer came up just short of their first ever title, the team did have national champions at four flights and had five players earn All-American honors.  Sophomore Peyton Miller (Ewing, NJ/Ewing HS) won his first national title at 1st Singles, earning him All-American honors.  Freshman Marcin Gniadzik was National Champion at 4th Singles, earning All-American honors.  Gniadzik and freshman teammate Jake Tavel (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) were also National Champions and All-Americans at 2nd Doubles.

Despite falling just short of the national title, MCCC men’s tennis has plenty to be proud of including five of its six players earning All-American honors.  In addition to the National Champions mentioned above, Runner-Ups in any championship match earn Second Team All-American honors.  Freshmen Michael Satawa (Cottage Valley, NY/Nyack HS) was runner-Up at 5th Singles and freshman Boris Espinoza (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) was runner-up at 6th Singles, earning them 2nd Team All-American honors.  Tavel was Runner-up at 2nd Singles, earning him his second All-American honors (along with 1st Team honors at 2nd Doubles).

The 2nd place finish ties the highest ever finish for Mercer men’s tennis when the Vikings were also National Runner-Ups in 2016.  Miller became the fourth player in Mercer’s history to win the National Championship at 1st Singles.

Mercer won their first Region 19 Championship since 2016.  Despite falling just short of a national title, the Vikings had an amazing season and run.
