Mercer men’s soccer completed a perfect 19-0-2 season that fell just short of a national title. MCCC won both of its opening games of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament to advance to the National Semifinals.
Mercer faced CCBC Essex in the National Semifinals and battled the Knights to a scoreless tie in regulation and double overtime, forcing penalty kicks to decide which team would move on to the National Championship game. CCBC Essex advanced to the National title game 4-3 over Mercer ending Mercer’s incredible season in heartbreaking fashion.
The National Semifinal game was played in driving rain in Wichita Kansas and was a defensive battle between two of the top teams in the country. Mercer had a number of near misses on goal in both regulation and overtime, forcing the game to come down to penalty kicks. The Knights found the net one more time than MCCC, literally and figuratively washing away the Mustangs’ hopes of a national title.
Despite the devastating ending to the season Mercer has much to be proud of including a perfect recording, top ten ranking all season and outstanding representation of the college on the national stage.
