Mercer men’s soccer advances to the Semifinals of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament following two wins in pool play. MCCC opened the tournament with a 2-1 win vs Pellissippi State on Sunday November 16 th and secured their trip to the final four with a 3-0 win vs Neosho County on Tuesday, November 18 th.
In Mercer’s 2-1 win vs Pellissippi State, the Panthers took an early 1-0 lead with a goal five minutes into the game. Mercer responded with a goal from sophomore Daniel Garcia fifteen minutes into the game. A goal by sophomore Deniz Karcher at the 71st minute mark put the Mustangs ahead 2-1 and gave MCCC the win in their opening win of the tournament.
Mercer took control early in their 3-0 win vs Neosho County. Karcher scored two minutes into the game to give MCCC an early lead. Mercer did not score again until the 79th minute on a goal from freshman Emilio Muguruza. A goal by sophomore Jesse Van Den Berg in the 83 rd minute helped Mercer seal a 3-0 win and trip to the National Semifinals.
Mercer will take on CCBC Essex on Thursday, November 20 th at 6:30 PM (EST). CCBC Essex is 19-4 on the season and was ranked 9 th in the final regular season poll. The Knights were the #4 seed in the National Tournament and advanced out of Pool D with a 3-2 win vs Madison College and 1-0 win over last year’s National Champion Northeast College.
