Mercer men’s soccer tied Saint Clair County CC in the Northeast District Championship in Port Huron, Michigan on November 8th. Saint Clair advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament on penalty kicks. Heading into the match, Mercer was 17-0 on the season and ranked second in DII men’s soccer.
Sophomore Riku Yasuda scored a goal six minutes into the game to give the Mustangs an early lead. At. Clair tied the game late in the first half to put the score 1-1 at the half. Sophomore Deniz Karcher scored an unassisted goal in the 67th minute to put MCCC ahead 2-1 but a goal by the Skippers with ten minutes remaining in regulation forced overtime. Following two scoreless periods of overtime, the District Championship game came down to a shootout with St. Clair advancing on penalty kicks.
Mercer still has a chance to qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament as there are four at large bids which will be announced at the NJCAA Division II Selection Show on November 11th.
