On Thursday, 9/11 the MCCC Athletic Department organized a 9/11 Tribute prior to Mercer’s men’s soccer game vs Monroe University. The game featured a brief pregame ceremony to honor the victims of the attack 24 years ago. Mini flags were given out to both teams to hold during the playing of the National Anthem. Pregame and halftime music played were song associated with 9/11. Senior Women’s Administrator Erin Cahill-Wetzel read a reflection about being in college at the time of the attacks and the difficulty of that day, including sharing about her college cross country teammate’s father who was killed that day.
“This was the least we could do to recognize the victims of this tragedy. Having a team play on this date gave us the opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of the attack, which we felt was important to do. We didn’t want to ignore the significance of this date, even though majority of our students were born after 2001 when the attacks took place. Even if it was small gestures, I am glad we were able to do something.”
