Mercer men’s basketball got off to a rough start with the Mustangs starting 0-8 and losing four games by five points or less. MCCC finally got their first win on December 5th 80-76 vs Manor in the Roadrunner Classic hosted by RCSJ Gloucester. With the win, the Mustangs advanced to the Championship Game of the Classic.
In what has seemingly become a pattern for MCCC men’s basketball this season, the Mustangs struggled in the second half and lost 85-80 to host RCSJ Gloucester. In Mercer’s tournament opening win, sophomore Torren Greene (Berlin, NJ/Paul VI) had 28 points. Sophomore Joell Idrovo (Hamilton, NJ/Solebury School) also had a big game for MCCC with eighteen points, six rebounds and five assists.
In a very balanced effort from the Mustangs, freshman Cameron James (Ewing, NJ/Ewing HS) had twelve points, sophomore Drew Parrish (New York, NY/Murray Bergtraum) had nine points and eight assists and freshman Devon Riddick (Monmouth Junction, NJ/Franklin HS) added eight points off the bench.
In Mercer’s overtime loss vs RCSJ Gloucester, Idrovo had another big game, scoring 33 points and hitting six three point field goals. Parrish added 15 points and four assists and freshman Roman Frenklah (Ashkelon, Israel/Comprehensive A Municipal School) had eleven points and eight rebounds in the loss.
The Roadrunner Classic marks Mercer’s third overtime loss this season and the second one of the week as Mercer loss 93-90 at Del Tech on December 2nd.
MCCC has been in almost every single one of their games but their nemesis has been the second half. If the Mustangs could close out games going forward, the season could be headed in a much better direction. MCCC has three games remaining in 2025 and fifteen games when they return in 2026.
