MCCC Basketball Teams Host Cancer Awareness Night

 2/10/26

On Tuesday, February 3rd, MCCC Basketball hosted Cancer Awareness Night at their women’s and men’s basketball games.  The night focused on bringing awareness of all types of cancer.  The night began with Mercer’s own Liz Rzasa, a two-time cancer survivor singing the National Anthem.  Rzasa is Assistant to the Dean in Business, Technology and Professional Studies.  At halftime of both games, Mercer Athletic Department’s Senior Women Administrator Erin Cahill-Wetzel shared about her battles with cancer, speeches she hoped to both educate and inspire those in attendance. “I wanted to keep the night positive and upbeat and not sad and emotional.”

To fit this theme those in attendance could take motivational stickers or quotes and fill out forms in honor of those who are fighting or who have cancer.  While it was difficult to plan and do much with a busy end of the season basketball schedule and spring sports about to begin, Cahill-Wetzel hoped that the night raised awareness about cancer even if the night was not as big as it was in the past.  “We brought back Cancer Awareness Night after two years off and that’s a start.  I would like to do a lot more going forward, but this year we at least got the night back on the calendar and can build on this going forward.”

The night was small and simple and also resulted in wins for both of Mercer’s basketball teams as well.  The women beat Del Tech and the men got a thrilling overtime win to clinch a spot in the Region 19 playoffs.
