Once the soccer season ends, the MCCC gym heats up as the basketball season gets underway. This season the Mercer gym has not only been packed with fans but some new clubs generating more energy and enthusiasm for Mercer’s basketball teams.
One newly formed club is the Mercer Dance Team which has performed at halftime of both the men’s and women’s games. The Dance Team helped introduce Mercer’s new mascot, Maverick at the Grand Reveal Block Party in October. Not only has the team performed dance routines, they have helped lead cheers in the stands during the games. The advisor of the Dance Team is Jenna Lawson.
Another newly formed club bringing energy to Mercer’s basketball games is the Mustang Spirit Club led by club advisors Holly Beinert and Mike DeAngelis. The Mustang Spirit Club was created “with one big vision: to build a stronger sense of community, belonging, and pride at Mercer County Community College.” The club made green and yellow noisemakers out of file folders for fans at November home games and also had signs that spelled out Mustangs for fans to hold.
Erin Cahill-Wetzel, Senior Women’s Administrator and Coordinator of Sports Information and Special Events has enjoyed the presence of these two clubs at Mercer’s home games. “Both of these clubs have brought a lot of energy to our home games. Sports is a way to bring the community together so to have two new clubs want to come and be a part of our basketball games has been great.”
The Dance team will be performing at some of the remaining home basketball games in the new year. The Mustang Spirit will be returning for spring sports to support.
MCCC Athletics looks forward to more from both the Mercer Dance Team and Mustang Spirit in the new year!
