MCCC Basketball Hosts Veterans Appreciation Games

The MCCC Athletic Department hosted their first ever Veterans’ Appreciation Games on Thursday, November 13th.  The games which were held two days after Veterans Day had the goal of recognizing both veterans attending MCCC and those in attendance.

The games began with veteran student athlete Spencer Stephenson reading the poem "The Veteran", accompanied by another veteran student athlete Tomas Money.  The reading of the poem was followed by the singing of the national anthem by MCCC student and Eagle Scout Olivia Dzbenski.

The beautifully sung national anthem and ceremony seemingly moved both the crowd and women’s basketball who beat Cecil 86-45.  Men’s basketball fell just short of their first win of the season, losing 71-69.

Vice President of Student Affairs Carolyn White spoke at halftime of the women’s game thanking veterans for their service and acknowledging all they do to keep our country safe.

The Veterans’ Recognition Ceremony was organized by Coordinator of Military and Veterans Service Marjorie Pavlichko and Senior Women’s Administrator Erin Cahill-Wetzel.

Head Men’s Lacrosse Matt Davies got as many players as he could to attend the game to watch their teammate Spencer at the pregame ceremony.  “We were excited.  The team is close and we definitely wanted to show our support to Spencer.”

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Howard Levy was glad to see his veteran player Tomas Money recognized before the game.  “Tomas is a quiet kid, but I know he really appreciated the recognition.  It was nice that he was able to meet another veteran student athlete that night.”

Cahill-Wetzel was thrilled at this first ever Veterans Appreciation Night.  “It was so easy to work with Marjorie on this night and something that I hope we can do annually.  Having two veteran student athletes recognized made the night even more special and meaningful.”

Pavlichko was also very pleased with this first ever recognition night.  “The evening was exceptional.  My hope is that this is the first of many more to come.”

Thank you to all those who came out to the first ever Veterans Appreciation Games and an even bigger thank you to all those who have served or are serving our country.
