Athletics Putting MCCC on the National Stage

One of many things that athletic teams do for a college is help to put that institution on not just a local and regional stage, but on a national stage.  The schedule MCCC spring sports have played over the last few weeks demonstrate this more than ever.

Last week, Mercer baseball was on an international stage, when they hosted Academy of Baseball Canada, a team of post high school all stars from Canada, some who signed with NCAA Division I schools.  Mercer men’s and women’s tennis played in an invitational in South Carolina, facing University of South Carolina at Sumter and Oxford College at Emory from Georgia.  MCCC men’s tennis upset Oxford, last year’s NJCAA Division III National Champion.  Mercer men’s lacrosse hosted College of DuPage from Illinois.

Regionally, Mercer baseball have played Delaware Tech, Lackawanna from Scranton, Pennsylvania in addition to New Jersey schools including Raritan Valley, Salem CC, RCSJ Gloucester, Ocean CC, Camden CC to name a few.

In March, Mercer baseball travelled to Myrtle Beach and faced two schools from Minnesota (Rochester Tech and Minnesota North Itasca.)  The Vikings also played Clark State College from Ohio while in Myrtle Beach.  MCCC baseball also took on Bryant & Stratton in Virginia and Garrett College in Maryland.  Mercer softball played Frederick CC and Harford CC in Maryland.  Mercer baseball just played Monroe from New York and softball will take on Suffolk County CC from New York.  MCCC men’s lacrosse played Mohawk Valley CC and SUNY Jefferson in upstate New York.

Mercer’s fall sports also helped put Mercer County Community College on the national stage.  MCCC men’s soccer opened up the 2024 season with games against Bunker Hill CC and Northern Essex CC in Massachusetts.  In the District Championship, Mercer men’s soccer beat Schoolcraft College from Michigan to advance to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.  The National Tournament was held in Huntsville, Alabama and MCCC faced Phoenix College from Arizona and Northeast CC from Nebraska.

Mercer’s sports teams have played schools from fifteen different states in 2024-2025.  The local, regional and national exposure that MCCC Athletics brings Mercer County Community College is just one of many reasons that sports is such a vital part, not just of MCCC, but of any college.  Mercer Athletics has put our college on the national and international stage.
