Women's Soccer Player Schroeder Selected as NGWS Award Winner

Mercer sophomore women’s soccer player Lisa Schroeder (Leiferde, Germany/Sportsymnasium Neubrandenburg) has been selected as the Vikings National Girls and Women in Sports (NGWS) Woman of the Year Award Winner.  Schroeder’s achievements on the field and in the classroom led to her selection.  Schroeder was honored at Seton Hall University on Saturday, February 18 th.

Schroeder earned 1 st Team All-Region 19 honors this fall and was also named the Region 19 Women’s Soccer Player of the Year.  The sophomore back helped lead the Vikings to the first undefeated (14-0) regular season in MCCC women’s soccer history.

Schroeder helped anchor a Vikings defense that had 8 shutouts on the season.  Schroeder started all sixteen games for the Vikings and had 1 goal and 4 assists.  The Vikings were one win away from a Region 19 Championship, falling to Sussex 1-4 in the title game. Schroeder plans on continuing playing soccer at a four year school.

In addition to excelling on the field, Schroeder also excelled in the classroom.  Schroeder earned President’s List honors after the fall semester, finishing with a 4.0 GPA.

Head Women’s Soccer Coach Elyse Diamond is grateful for the opportunity to coach Schroeder.  “Lisa was such a gem to find all the way from Germany. She is an outstanding student-athlete and is very serious about her academics and soccer. Lisa is hard working, very competitive and has a great attitude. She was such a joy to have on our team.  The next school she chooses will be lucky to have her in their community. Lisa will be tough to replace.”

2023 marks the 37 th annual statewide celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Seton Hall University.  High schools, junior college and universities in New Jersey honor a “Woman of the Year.” This woman is honored at a luncheon before they are recognized at halftime of a women’s basketball game.  This year the celebration took place on Saturday, February 18 th when Seton Hall hosted Xavier University.  National Girls and Women in Sports Day is recognized on February 1 st annually.
