Conduct Science Research at Princeton University

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- This summer, 20 students from Mercer County
Community College's James Kerney Campus Youth College participated
in the Princeton University Materials Academy (PUMA). The three-week
science enrichment program targets underrepresented high school students
in Trenton and surrounding districts. The program is made possible
by the federally-funded Upward Bound program, which prepares economically
disadvantaged high school students for college and career opportunities.
Through hands-on, inquiry-based activities, Youth College students
examined advancements in cancer research, nano-technology, materials
science and water filtration with researchers from the Princeton Center
for Complex Materials (PCCM). Participants also attended lectures
on the Princeton campus.
"The goal is expose these youngsters to various facets of science,
math and technology," said Donald Davis, director of MCCC's Youth
College programs. "They were very excited about what they learned.
PUMA is helping to increase the numbers of at-risk students who consider
science as a career field."
In addition to the Upward Bound program, MCCC's James Kerney Campus
administers the GEAR UP and SMILE programs and the Talent Search program.
GEARUP and SMILE is a 20-week program designed to stimulate the interests
of minority youngsters in math, science and computer technology. Talent
Search, for ages 12 and up, offers tutoring, academic, career, personal
and financial aid counseling, as well as job site and college visits
for approximately 800 students each year. |
