for Continuing Studies Expands Course
Offerings to Respond to Career Needs

Windsor, N.J - Responding to the needs of the county's workforce in a
difficult economy, Mercer County Community College's noncredit division,
the Center for Continuing Studies (CCS) has broadened its slate of spring
and summer course offerings. In addition to programs that can lead to
new careers, the center also offers short-term classes to update skills
and gain tips in searching for a new job. Most classes meet at the West
Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
To help those currently out of work, CCS is offering a four-session workshop
in "Achieving Success" from June 3 - 24 and again July 22 -
Aug. 12. The focus is on learning temperaments and the careers most suitable
for each individual.
Taught by professionals in their fields, programs offered by CCS range
from beginner level training to advanced programs designed for experienced
professionals. For example, the Certified Nursing Assistant program offers
90 hours of training for high school graduates or GED holders who wish
to begin a new career in this growing field. Classes meet Saturdays for
16 weeks beginning June 13. For experienced human resource professionals,
Mercer offers a six-session program called "Leading in a Changing
World" which meets Tuesday evenings beginning June 2.
A unique new program prepares participants to become a New Jersey certified
animal control officer, meeting for seven Saturdays beginning May 9. Another
is a quick start program in Microsoft Office 2007 software for those who
want to update their skills. It meets for two sessions on Fridays, Aug.
14-21 at 9:30 a.m.
Also new is a program called ServSafe for those who wish to enter, and
those already employed in the food service field. The eight-hour food
safety management course provides training in foodborne illnesses. Beginning
in 2010 it will be mandatory in New Jersey for at least one person in
certain food establishments to have this credential. The class meets June
1 and 8, with the exam to be administered at the end of the second class.
Other business classes will address nonprofit management, grantwriting,
real estate, small business management and finance. A full slate of computer
application courses includes topics from basic skills to web design and
development, Dreamweaver 8, JavaScript and Cisco certification.
The center also offers a full array of personal interest classes in the
culinary arts, photography, fitness, CPR, ballroom dancing and much more.
New this summer is kayaking at Mercer County Park and field hockey referee
certification.
