MCCC's 2006 Scholarship Dinner Dance a Success 3-15--06 A festive evening with a serious purpose, Mercer County Community College's Scholarship Dinner Dance at the Hyatt Regency Princeton drew 425 supporters on March 11. The event raised approximately $100,000 for scholarship funds for students who otherwise might not have the opportunity for a college education. "This year the college is celebrating its 40th anniversary," said Acting President Tom Wilfrid. "I like to say that we measure the success of those 40 years by the successes of our students. Many of these successes happened because of your support." Honored at the event were Roma Bank, Borden Perlman Insurance Company, and HelenMarie Dolton for their service to the college and the community. Co-chairing the event were Maureen Ludico of the Hyatt Regency Princeton, and Nina Melker of Yardville National Bank. Their committee orchestrated an elegant evening with a “Hollywood Lights” theme and a successful silent auction. An actor playing “Joan” greeted guests, Oscar style, as they walked down a red carpet. “Distinguished Corporate Friend” Award: Roma Bank Roma Bank’s support of MCCC and its students has a long history. President and CEO Peter Inverso served as a member of the college’s Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1986. Chairman Maurice Perilli is a former member of the administrative staff. In early 2004, Roma established a scholarship fund for students majoring in health professions at Mercer, which continues each year. In recognition of this and their ongoing commitment to education, the college named the auditorium of its Conference Center the “Roma Bank Auditorium.” “Community Service Award:” Borden-Perlman Insurance Honored for their commitment to the community, the principals of the Borden-Perlman Insurance Company are actively involved with numerous social service organizations. Richard Perlman served on the MCCC Board of Trustees from 1983 to 2000, and as chair from 1995 to1998. Currently a member of the college’s Foundation Board, he is also on the boards of Greenwood House and the Jewish Federation Foundation. Jeffrey Perlman is president of Greenwood House, Home for Jewish Aged; and vice chair of the board of the Mercer Regional Chamber of Commerce. He has served for a years on the ARC/Mercer’s Mansion in May committee, and was a trustee and member of the executive committees at the College of New Jersey. Roma Bank's awardees. At right is former MCCC president, John Hanley. Doug Borden was formerly the president and is now a member of the board of the Rescue Mission of Trenton. He is a board member of Kids Bridge and has served on the St. Francis Hospital Capital Fundraising Committee and on the Friends of the State Museum and Trenton City Museum boards. Person of the Year: HelenMarie Dolton HelenMarie Dolton, who retired from MCCC in 1992, started her career at the college in 1967, when she was hired to begin the college’s Nursing program, now one of its largest. After serving as chair of Nursing, then chair of Nursing and Allied Health, Dolton became dean of the Division of Science and Allied Health, overseeing 41 faculty and staff members. During her tenure she applied for and received several major grants to facilitate the Nursing program’s growth, including a federal grant which enabled the college to build its science building. During her leadership more than 2,000 students graduated from the Nursing program. Dolton earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Georgetown University, her master’s degree from Saint John’s University in nursing administration, and pursued additional studies at Columbia University. After her retirement from MCCC, Dolton volunteered full-time as director of religious education at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Ewing. She volunteers with SeniorNet, teaching computer skills to senior citizens, and also chairs a group of college retirees that meets monthly.
