to Place Rail Transportation Industry Professionals
on the Right Track

WINDSOR, N.J. - With the growing emphasis on energy and environmental
concerns, cities across America are investing heavily in new railroad
infrastructure to develop both passenger and freight transportation, says
Mark Mattis, a New Jersey Transit engineer and trainer who will teach
a new certificate program at Mercer County Community College.
Beginning Nov. 15, the college's Center for Continuing Studies will offer
the "Basic Training Certificate" for locomotive engineers and
conductors, which also prepares students for careers as train dispatchers
or transportation management trainees. Students will receive a complete
overview of railroad operations, equipment, safety, infrastructure and
security issues. Upon completion, participants will be eligible to interview
for well-paid positions at heavy or light rail companies across the United
States.
Mattis says there is a dramatic increase in demand for people to fill
various positions in the industry. He says average starting salaries for
these types of positions nationally can be $65,000 to $100,000.
Classes will be offered on eight Saturdays, Nov. 15 to Jan. 24, from 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at MCCC's West Windsor Campus. (Classes will not meet
Nov. 29, Dec. 20 and Dec. 27.) Tuition and fees of $350 include materials.
Participants must have at least a high school diploma or GED to enroll.
