Latina Women's Council and MCCC
Partner for Student Scholarships

WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Latina Women's Council of Mercer County has
provided $5,000 to Mercer County Community College (MCCC) for Latino
student scholarships. The college's Foundation Board has matched
the grant, enabling ten students, who will attend MCCC, to receive
$1,000 scholarships each.
The students
were honored at a reception on July 17 at the college's Conference
Center, with County Executive Brian Hughes addressing the students
and families. Nilda Garcia, Latina Women's Council president,
presented certificates to the students and read sections from
their application essays.

Erika
Espinal, a recent Trenton Central High School graduate who wants to
be a medical assistant, said "At the hospital where I volunteer,
a vast majority of the professional personnel do not speak Spanish.
As a future health care professional who is bilingual, I will bridge
the communication barrier between patient and caregiver."
Jennifer Salguero, a Trenton Central High School graduate who will major
in education, said she will be the first person in her family to attend
college. "Life is full of surprises, but no matter where life takes
me, I have the faith that I will become a better person and accomplish
all my dreams."
The
Latina Women's Council raised the dollars through a fundraising campaign.
They also presented a scholarship to Ashley McKinnis, who will attend
Rider University.
