WEST WINDSOR
NJ: Two graduating students at Mercer County Community College,
Jessica Harhigh and Marie Luisi, both of Hamilton, were chosen
as members of New Jersey's "All-State Academic Team"
for 2006 by the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. The students
were honored by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges on May
4 at the Phi Theta Kappa Day celebration, along with honorees
from New Jersey's 18 other community colleges.
Harhigh is
a Communications major who plans to transfer to Rowen University
with the goal of becoming a news anchor. Luisi, a Humanities and
Social Science major, plans to transfer to Rider University with
the ultimate goal of a law degree. Both are honors students and
active members of the PTK honor society. Both attend Mercer on
full scholarships from NJSTARS.
The day included
a visit to the State House to speak with legislative leaders and
representatives from Governor Jon S. Corzine's administration,
a luncheon at the Trenton Marriott for honorees and their families,
and a talk by alumna Maureen King, a 2000 MCCC graduate and former
Academic Team honoree.
The New Jersey
Phi Theta Kappa Day celebration is sponsored by PSE&G. Students
with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher are invited to join
the honor society. Twenty-two of New Jersey's four-year colleges
and universities have offered over $1 million in scholarships
to Phi Theta Kappa students transferring to their institutions.
