WINDSOR, N.J. – The artwork of "Mercer County Artists
2006" (MCA) will be on display at The Gallery at Mercer County
Community College through April 14. Gallery Curator Tricia Fagan
recently announced the winners, selected by juror Julie Mellby,
graphic arts curator at Firestone Library of Princeton University.
More
than $1,500 in purchase and merit prizes were awarded this year.
Mellby selected four Honorable Mentions, a Juror’s Choice,
and a Best in Show. This year’s Juror’s Award went to
Graziella V. Smith of Monroe Township for her painting, Abe. Honorable
mentions were presented for A View by Jacqueline Berkman of Trenton;
Black Cat Series #5 by Jennifer Cadoff of Princeton; Ironing in
the Nude by Thomas Kelly of Hamilton; and Let it Snow, Let it Snow
by Harlan Krakovitz of Yardley, PA.
This
year marks the first time that a Best in Show prize was announced.
“We’re very grateful to Utrecht Paint Supplies of Cranbury,
which donated a $250 gift card for the Best in Show this year,”
says Fagan. The prize was awarded to Hamilton resident Nancy Zamboni
for her drawing Fresh Start 2. According to Mellby, she selected
the piece “…because of its complex study of form and
dimension…” which offers the viewer “…delicious
pleasure – and surprising drama for such a still composition.”
Ida
Perez Margicin, director of Mercer County’s Cultural and Heritage
Commission, which sponsors the exhibit in partnership with The Gallery
at MCCC, selected five pieces for the annual MCA Purchase Awards:
Bird Song by L.D. Cicchini of Princeton Junction; Riverview by Sue
DiBattisa of Bristol, PA; Stormy Morning by Ruth A. Kaufman of Princeton;
Bazaar by Florence Moonan of Stockton; and Rally in the Rain by
Ted Peck of Princeton. The works become part of the County’s
permanent art collection. Paul Cerna, president of the West Windsor
Arts Council, announced two prizes to this year: to Dianne R. Gozonsky
for an untitled mixed media collage and Judy Kaye for her watercolor
Enchanted Land. This is the fourth year that West Windsor’s
Art Council has presented this award to outstanding MCA artists
from the township.
According
to Fagan, the exhibit received more than 180 entries. Seventy-nine
pieces were selected: ten sculptures and 69 two-D works in various
media including watercolor, graphite/charcoal, oil, acrylic, collage,
mixed media, silk painting, hand-made paper, prints and pastels.
Mercer
County Artists is an annual, juried exhibition open to all artists,

is supported through a grant from the Mercer County Cultural and
Heritage Commission with funding from the New Jersey State Council
