Video Production Entrepreneur Larry Kaltenbach

As
proprietor of Stone Tower Media, Larry Kaltenbach '85 (A.A.S., Television)
of Oakland, N.J. provides a vast array of technical services to
clients in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, delivering sound
and public address systems, teleprompting, and audiovisual services.
His clients include major news and entertainment networks as well
as corporations and business organizations such as Anheuser-Busch,
Paramount Pictures, New Jersey Nets and Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
Kaltenbach's
passion for broadcast production began during his childhood. "I
was fascinated by the people and places showing up on my parents'
living room TV," he said. "When I was six years old, my
older brother found a color TV in the trash, fixed it, and my family
and I watched the Apollo 11 moon landing on that set. That pretty
much iced it for me; this TV thing was just way too cool to ignore."
For the past 20 years, Kaltenbach has worked on projects ranging
from network news programs, live talk shows, film-style sitcoms,
soap operas, and corporate productions to live arena sound mixing
for professional sports teams.

"I enjoy the variety of work situations and locations, and
the interaction with people," said Kaltenbach, who has worked
freelance in audio and video production since 1987. He established
Stone Tower Media in 2001 as a sole proprietorship. "The work
is invigorating. It requires staying on top of all advanced technologies."
For Kaltenbach, choosing Mercer was an easy decision. "MCCC
offered a truly complete and focused television program with the
added benefit of being very close to one of the world's largest
television production cities," he said. "The staff and
faculty are skilled and knowledgeable professionals. They shared
their real-world experience, which gave me an upper hand when I
entered this business." Upon graduating Mercer, Kaltenbach
transferred to New York University where he earned a bachelor's
degree in television and radio.
Kaltenbach learned many tricks of the trade as one of Mercer's interns
at Suburban Cablevision in Hamilton, N.J. "While there, I rotated
within nearly every production job imaginable," he recalled.
"I believe that this Mercer-arranged opportunity to make real
mistakes and get past them was a key bridge to launching my current
career."
Retired MCCC television professor Ralph Tangey quickly comes to
Kaltenbach's mind as a source of inspiration. "He is practically
legend in the Northern New Jersey and New York City circles in which
I work. Ralph let you know when you screw up. I, along with other
students, appreciated his frankness, hilarious as it was."
Kaltenbach is the recipient of a National News Emmy Award for his
audio work associated with ABC's Nightline in 1996. The following
year, his audio work was nominated for a News Emmy for ABC's The
View.
He maintains his career has been an exciting journey. "Never
in my wildest dreams did I think I'd ever interface with some of
the faces I saw on screen as a youngster -- people like Muhammad
Ali, Howard Cosell, Mary Tyler Moore, Julia Child, Mario Andretti,
Paul McCartney, Clint Eastwood, and others," he said. "I've
also had the opportunity to set up television segments at interesting
places, such as The White House Oval Office during the time George
W. Bush was in office. There's never a dull moment."
