WEEK 1

            Focus: Introduction to Course & Materials

Activities/Assignments:

            PowerPoint presentation; Case Study collaboration

            Write a minimum of 3 questions from the distributed information

AVS:  Carefully read & complete pages 2-6, then complete Chapter 1 (in book)

ACOR:  Preview text

LAB: Computer placement diagnostics

WEEK 2

Focus: Establishing a Community of Learners/Vocabulary

Activities/Assignments:

            Formal Introductions; Addressing Questions/Concerns

            Guidelines for effective vocabulary study

AVS:  Review pages 2-6, then complete Chapter 2 (in book)

ACOR:  Preview text

LAB: Complete computer placement diagnostics

WEEK 3

             

     CHAPTER ONE: THE READING PROCESS

 

Focus:  The PRO reading process; Collaborative learning

            Activities/Assignments:

AVS:  Complete Chapters 3 - 5 (in book); Prepare for vocabulary test #1

ACOR:  1) Complete chapter 1; *submit exercises 1.3 & 1.7

                  (*On paper, label each exercise, then write only the letter answers for

                  each multiple choice question, and write complete sentences for any

                  other questions. This is the proper format for all submitted assignments).

             

              2) After class discussion of previous assignments, submit *Mastery Test 1A,

                    pages 31-36 (Do exercises 1,3,4, &5 on paper using proper format; Do Ex.2

                    in your book). *This counts as a quiz, and must be typewritten!

LAB:  Introduction to lab; Begin RFU cards.

 

WEEKS 4 – 5

 

  CHAPTER TWO: WORKING WITH WORDS

 

            Focus:  Context Clues; Word Parts; Analogies; Specialized vocabulary; Textbook aids

            Activities/Assignments: 

AVS :   Take Test #1, then complete chapters 6 - 10 (in book)

ACOR:  1) Read pages 46-56; Do exercises 2.2 - 2.6 (in book); submit Ex.2.7 -

                   2.10; prepare for collaborative activity during class.

              2) Submit Mastery Test 2B (typewritten)          

                        LAB:  Introduction to RFU cards; Begin computer remediation

WEEKS 6-7                                                       

 

CHAPTER SEVEN: DEALING WITH GENDER

 

Focus:  Inferences; Irony; Connotations; Similes; Metaphors; Poetry; Literature

Activities/Assignments: 

AVS :   Take Test 2, then continue following Vocabulary Testing Schedule

ACOR:  1) Complete pages 350-360; submit exercises 7.1-7.2;

                    Complete Ex. 7.3 in the book to prepare for collaborative activity.

                                      2) Read pp.367-373 (“Why I Want A Wife”); submit exercises 7. 11,  7.13,

                                               & 7.14; prepare for class discussion

                                      3) Review p.373-376; complete Ex. 7.15-7.16 in book; collaborative activity

                                         4) Submit Mastery Test 7A (typewritten); Prepare for chapter 7 quiz.

WEEKS 8 -12                          

  

 CHAPTER THREE: OUR FOOD, OUR CULTURE;

CHAPTER FOUR:  STAYING WELL

 

Focus:  Topics & Stated Main Ideas; Implied Main Ideas; Major/Minor Supporting Details;

            Outlining; Summarizing

            Activities/Assignments:

AVS : Complete chapters and take tests as indicated on Vocabulary Testing Schedule 

ACOR:  1) Complete pages 106-121; class discussion followed by collaborative activity

                   (IMI wksht #1-4); Submit exercises 3.5

                  Class discussion followed by collaborative activity (IMI wksht #5-8).

                  Overview of supporting details (notes) & collaboration;

 

  2) Read pages 169-top178; submit exercises 4.2 & 4.3

      Review MI/SD notes; Submit exercise 3.6, then (on another paper) submit

       exercises 3.8 thru 3.10; Class discussion; submit exercise 4.7.

             

  3) Do Reading 3: “Easy Bake Ovens and Fashion Magazines: Women’s

                   Complex Relationships to Food and Eating” (p.144-146); Complete Ex. 3.17

                   and 3.18

 

  4) Submit Mastery Test 3B (typewritten)

 

 5)  Do Reading #4: “How Stress Works” (p.194-198); submit exercises 4.15

     & 4.18 (w/ additional questions from instructor); class discussion

 

6)    Submit Mastery Test 4B (typewritten; Omit summary on exercise 3)

Focus:  Fact/Opinion; Author’s purpose; Bias & Tone 

Activities/Assignments: 

AVS :   Complete chapters and take tests as indicated on Vocabulary Testing Schedule 

ACOR:  1) Complete pages 409-420; submit exercises 8.3 & 8.4; class discussion 

               2) Do Reading #2: “Colorblind: When Blacks and Whites Can See No Gray”

                   (p.420-423); submit exercises 8.8 - 8.10; class discussion

              3) Complete pages 427-440; submit exercises 8.17 – 8.20

                                      4) Submit Mastery Test 8A (typewritten)

            LAB:  Independent rotation of all skills.

    

      CHAPTER  NINE: SCIENCE, SOCIETY, AND DISEASE

Focus:  Critical Thinking; Evaluating Arguments 

Activities/Assignments: 

AVS :   Take Test 6

ACOR:  1) Complete pages 457-478; submit exercises 9.2, 9.4, & 9.6; class discussion.

                                      2) Do Reading 4: “The Going Rate on Shrinks”(p.479-482); submit Ex. 9.13

                                         3) Submit Mastery Test 9A

           

LAB:  Continue independent rotation of all skills.
