SCORING CRITERIA

 

COURSEWORK:                  (25% of grade)

 

NOTE:  Dark blue or black ink MUST be used for any coursework assignments

               that are not typed.  Pencil may be used only for lab assignments and tests.  A red

               pen or pencil (not marker) is required for in-class correction during discussions.

 

All coursework will receive scores ranging from 0 to 5, but will be calculated as 4 being the highest score. Therefore, a score of 5 is actually “extra credit”.   

The bonus score of 5 is obtained by meeting all the requirements of a 4, and also:

                        The paper is typed, presenting a college-level appearance

                        The writer supports responses with additional sentences and information.

                        The writer adds notes of explanation or citations with the corrections

 

 A score of 4 is obtained by meeting all of the following requirements:

Assignments are prepared ahead of time (not done during class) and submitted when requested.

Appropriate corrections and/or notes are added during class discussion.

Paper has a college-level appearance and presentation:

     Complete heading (name, date, section, and chapter/exercise number).

     No torn spiral notebook paper; Legible handwriting and neat presentation.

           

A score of 3  is obtained by meeting some of the requirements of a 4:

Assignments are prepared ahead of time (not during class) and submitted when requested. Also, the responses indicate that an honest effort has been made.

 

A score of 2 or 1 is obtained by meeting a minimum of the requirements:

Assignments are handed in after the requested time, and/or

Responses indicate a minimum amount of time and effort on the task

NOTE: Any late assignments MUST be typed prior to submission.

            A score of 0 is obtained when an assignment has not been handed in.

 

VOCABULARY TESTS:                  (25% of Grade) 

 

1.      There are 6 vocabulary tests based on 30 chapters in Advancing Vocabulary Skills.  These tests are to be taken in the testing center at either the West Windsor Campus (LA215), or the James Kerney Campus (KC311).The hours of operation for these two centers may be different, so you should visit PRIOR to your scheduled test date in order to become familiarized with the proper times and procedures. 

 

2.      You will receive a schedule of suggested deadlines for the tests, and they are to be taken on your own time.  Points may be deducted if tests are not taken on time, so please don’t wait until the last minute to take your test.  Upon completion, your test will be immediately scored, and you will be given a   printout of your results.  You must bring the printout of each score to the instructor so that it can be recorded in the grade book.

 

MIDTERM EXAM:                         (12% of Grade)

 

1.      The midterm exam is an essay on the book Who Moved My Cheese?

2.      It is a take home exam with preassigned points for each question.

3.      You may turn in your completed midterm exam as early as you like, but it will NOT be accepted after the due date.

 

FINAL  EXAM:                                 (13% of Grade)

 

1.  The final exam is an oral report (5-7 minutes) on a fictional novel of your choice.

2.  There are preassigned points for every aspect of your presentation.

 

QUIZZES:                                          (15% of Grade)

 

1.      The assigned mastery tests for each chapter of A Community of Readers will count as quizzes. They will not be accepted late. They will be given a percentage score.

2.      Additional mini-quizzes on lecture notes may also be given.

 

LAB:                                                   (10% of Grade)

 

Your lab grade will be based on your attendance, ability to organize your lab folder by following directions, and ability to pace yourself to accomplish a reasonable amount of progress.
