Radiography Class of 2014 Gears Up for Clinical Education
This year 25 Radiography Science majors were accepted into the professional phase of the Radiography Program. In preparation for clinical education activities beginning September 11, 2012, these students received an on-campus orientation at the Student Center. Topics covering clinical education policies, the clinical competency process, radiation protection and infection control were included during this 4-hour program. The orientation was arranged by Prof. William Petrosky, the Radiography Program's clinical coordinator.
Also included in the orientation was a mini-workshop presented by Mrs. Lydia Walegir, a learning disabilities specialist from Student Support Services covering time management. Aside from her work with students with learning disabilities, Mrs. Walegir also works with students at all levels. Radiography students were made aware of the resources available to them, including the Learning and Writing Centers. Regarding the mini-workshop, its purpose was to help students achieve the proper balance of work, schooling, family life and personal care given their current and anticipated schedules.
Not all of the orientation involved work. There was time to relax and even have class pictures taken. The atmosphere during the orientation remained positive and upbeat. There was also plenty of time to entertain questions regarding the particulars of clinical education.
A highlight of the on-campus orientation was the opportunity that new students had to meet their clinical instructors and also interact with students in the second-year class The Radiography Program is affiliated with 6 hospitals/medical centers and a radiology imaging center. Regrettably, not all of the clinical instructors could be present because of scheduling conflicts. However, there was sufficient representation from the Class of 2013 to make the meet-and-greet brown bag luncheon informative and reassuring.
Best wishes to the students of the class of 2014 as they begin their clinical education!
