Requirements for English 101

Before enrolling in English 101, you need to have qualified for the course through the college placement test or through earning a grade of C or higher in ENG 024 or an equivalent course.

In English 101 we write on computers and on paper, read, think, talk, revise our thoughts and words, read drafts of papers, answer questions about drafts, think some more, edit our written ideas for clarity and punctuation and so on.

You will work by yourself and in groups. You will be expected to:

  • Read assigned readings before coming to class.
  • Contribute at least two ideas to the group task for the day or week.
  • Listen to others (as well as talk to them).
  • Appreciate that difference of opinion is a healthy way to explore ideas.
  • Reread the assigned readings as you prepare to write essays.
  • Write essay drafts during designated labs and, when necessary, finish them outside of class.
  • Bring essay drafts for other students to respond to during class.
  • Read and respond to the drafts of two or more other students on designated class day.
  • Consider and plan out different ways to revise essay drafts.
  • Revise and edit essays during designated labs.
  • Complete other assignments that sharpen your thinking, revising and editing skills.

You qualify for a final grade when you have done, with academic integrity, the requirements for passing:

  • Attend class. The English Department limits absences to six class hours. You need to attend 26 of the 30 classes. (Each class is 1½ class hours.)
  • Read all the assigned readings.
  • Complete five essays with a passing average. (You must turn in all five!)
  • Pass the departmental final essay. (You must take the final!)
  • Complete the daily assignments. Some will be collected and checked. Some will be checked but not collected. Most collections will be announced, some unannounced.
  • Study for and take the quizzes on assigned readings and on the concepts from the daily assignments. Most quizzes are announced.
