Grading in English 101

You qualify for a final grade when you have done, with academic integrity, the requirements for passing:

  • Attend class. The English Department limits absences to six class hours. You need to attend 26 of the 30 classes. (Each class is 1½ class hours.)
  • Read all the assigned readings.
  • Complete five essays with a passing average. (You must turn in all five!)
  • Pass the departmental final essay. (You must take the final!)
  • Complete the daily assignments. Some will be collected and checked. Some will be checked but not collected. Most collections will be announced, some unannounced.
  • Study for and take the quizzes on assigned readings and on the concepts from the daily assignments. Most quizzes are announced.

Your final grade will be based on these graded assignments if your departmental final essay (or a portfolio appeal) is passing:

 Weight in the final grade
Essay 11
Essay 21
Essay 3 written in class1
Essay 42
Essay 52
Collected other assignments1
Quizzes1

The details about grading each assignment will be available as you work on Essays 1-5. The grading criteria for the departmental final will be announced.

A C or higher is required in order to enroll in the next course, ENG 102 or ENG 112.
