Cuddly
Bear Puppet Is Star of "Winnie the Pooh"
At Kelsey Theatre June 1-3
5/7/07
| A
tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff is coming to MCCC's Kelsey
Theatre. Maurer Productions OnStage presents "Winnie the Pooh"
Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3 at
2 and 4 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is conveniently located on the college's
West
Windsor campus at 1200 Old Trenton Road.
In
this enchanting musical adaptation based on the timeless tales of
A.A. Milne, Maurer Productions takes a uniquely creative approach
to the story of Pooh and friends. With the exception of Christopher
Robin, 15 characters who reside in the Hundred Acre Wood - Eeyore,
Piglet, Rabbit, Owl Kanga, Roo and more - are hand-crafted, stage-size
puppets that were custom-built for this show.
According
to "Pooh" director John Maurer, who designed and built
the puppets, they are similar in style to muppets and took several
months to construct. "We are doing the show as Bunraku Puppet
Theatre in the Japanese tradition," Maurer said. "The
puppeteers are not hidden behind walls or under the floor. They
are on stage with their puppet. This creates a hybrid performance
that blends the actors' expressions with their puppet characters."
Starring in "Winnie the Pooh" are: Thomas Martella as
Christopher Robin and Toni Campbell as Pooh. Appearing as Pooh's
colorful companions in the Hundred Acre Wood are: Jake Bazel as
Roo, Matthew Daley as Owl, Jesse Dubin as Eeyore, Jean Prall Rosolino
as Rabbit, and Nicole Spadafino as Piglet. Kanga is a two-person
puppet played by Katie Correll and Rosie Karlin. Ray Murphy is the
narrator. Also featured are Samantha Chapman as Tess the Mouse;
Tara Dorgan as Mindy the Bunny; Caroline Maurer as Chip the Chipmunk;
Hunter Maurer as Brandon the Turtle; Stacy Maurer Tulip the Skunk;
and Reed Schmidt as Cindy the Bunny. The production team includes
director/producer John Maurer, musical director Buzz Herman, choreographer
Jane Coult and stage manager Alycia Bauch-Cantor.
