Written by Margery Williams and first published in 1922, "The Velveteen Rabbit" evokes the joys and losses that come with growing up. A new stuffed rabbit arrives in the nursery and quickly learns the pecking order as he is snubbed by the more expensive, mechanical toys. Still, the Velveteen Rabbit comes to be valued by the Boy above all the other toys. When the Boy falls ill with scarlet fever, the rabbit is his constant companion. And when the rabbit is doomed to be destroyed along with other artifacts of the sick room, the Boy's love enables him to be magically transformed into a real live rabbit. "The Velveteen Rabbit" will delight children and bring warm memories to any grown-up who shared his or her childhood with a prized stuffed animal.
