Calling All Kids to "Strike Up The Band"
At MCCC's Kelsey Theatre Mar. 15

2/14/08

The Mercer County Symphonic Band will present an interactive, child-friendly concert as youngsters help "Strike up the Band." The one-of-a-kind event will take place on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Mercer County Community College's Kelsey Theatre, located on the college's West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

Back by popular demand, the performance provides the opportunity for children of all ages to play percussion instruments on stage with the 50-member ensemble, whose members range in age from 14 to 83. The audience will also be serenaded to the soundtracks of animated Disney movies with images projected on a large screen. A new element this year is a sing-along-performance of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."

Children are invited to participate on stage with the Mercer County Symphonic Band Mar. 15.

The concert begins with an opening piece performed by the band. The remainder of the program emphasizes full audience participation. "It's great fun every time we perform with kids," said Dr. Louis Woodruff, conductor. "Adults may also join their youngsters. During the concert, we turn cameras on everyone, which always thrills them.

"The lights, sounds, and video accompaniment create quite a lively family experience," Woodruff continues. "Emphasis is placed on making the music, the instruments and the experience accessible to children of all ages, as well as to the child within each of the adults. Listening skills are sharpened as everyone learns something about themselves as musicians and audience members."

The Band is supported by Mercer County Community College and a grant from the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the NJ State Council on the Arts.

Tickets are $8 for children, students and senior citizens, and $10 for adults. Free parking is available next to the theater.
