Summer concludes
with a trip to the islands at MCCC's Kelsey Theatre when The Pennington
Players present "Once On This Island." Dates and
show times for this magical, musical legend are Fridays, Aug. 17
and 24 at 8 p.m., Saturdays, Aug. 18 and 25 at 8 p.m., and Sundays,
Aug. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is conveniently located
on Mercer's West
Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
Set on an island
in the Caribbean's French Antilles, "Once On This Island"
combines themes from "The Little Mermaid" with "Romeo
and Juliet." Written by the award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens
and Stephen Flaherty and based on the novel, My Love, My Love
by Rosa Guy, the show tells of the tragic romance between Ti Moune,
a poor peasant girl, and Daniel, an upper class boy from the other
side of the island. Hampered by deeply imbedded social prejudices
and the interventions of the four gods who rule the island - Erzulie,
the Goddess of Love; Asaka, Mother of the Earth; Agwe, God of Water;
and Papa Ge, Demon of Death - their love will be sorely tested.
Originally opening off-Broadway, the show moved to Broadway in 1990,
where it ran for 469 performances and was nominated for eight Tony
Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. Remaining
true to its island inspiration throughout, the musical score features
rousing, upbeat numbers like "Mama Will Provide" and "Some
Say," as well as touching ballads like "The Human Heart"
and "Forever Yours."
