When a great
African king seeks a wife, word goes out to all the most desirable
maidens in the land. Enter the enchanted world of "Mufaro's
Beautiful Daughters," to be presented by the Dallas Children's
Theater (DCT) at MCCC's Kelsey Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2
and 4 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is located on Mercer's West
Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
An African variation
on the classic Cinderella fairytale, "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters"
is told with colorful staging and traditional African songs and
chants. The audience will meet the dignified and caring villager,
Mufaro, who has been blessed with two daughters who are both beautiful
-- but whose temperaments are very different temperaments. One sister,
Manyara, is always angry, while the other, Nyasha, is kind and gentle.
When Mufaro leaves for the hunt and the sisters are alone, a messenger
comes to the village to invite all the most worthy and beautiful
girls in the land to appear before The Great King so that he might
choose his Queen. Mufaro is pleased to learn that both his daughters
are being considered and agrees to accompany them at sunrise. Before
they can all set out, however, Manyara decides to get a head start
on her sister. The sisters' journey reveals much about their characters,
with goodness, generosity and love ultimately ruling the day.
With origins
in Zimbabwean folklore, the show is based on the Caldecott Medal-winning
book by Joe Steptoe and adapted for the stage by playwright Karen
Abbott.
Founded in 1984, Dallas Children's Theater was rated by Time Magazine
as one of the top five youth theaters in the nation. Serving more
