MCCC Students Present Life Lessons in Fulghum’s “Kindergarten” May 13-15

MCCC Drama students, along with several community actors, will celebrate the gifts of everyday life when they present “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” Dates and show times for this charming show are: Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. The performances take place at MCCC’s Kelsey Theatre, located on Mercer’s West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

“Kindergarten” is directed by Drama Program Coordinator Nick Anselmo and produced by Kelsey Theatre Manager M. Kitty Getlik. It is based on the best-selling books by Robert Fulghum, which encourage people to live life with the wonder and simplicity of children, and has been adapted for the theater by Ernest Zulia with music composed by David Caldwell. “Audience members will immediately recognize much of the material, as many of us have grown up with quotes from Fulghum's books,” Anselmo said.

A masterful piece of theatrical storytelling in revue format, the show includes monologues, dialogues, multiple voice narration, and nine original songs. “The show gives our drama students a rich opportunity to spread their wings,” Anselmo said. He notes that "Kindergarten" has been performed all over the world including a star-studded production at The Kennedy Center.

According to Anselmo, Peter de Mets, who is the show’s musical director and pianist, is on stage and functions as a kind of stand-in for Fulghum. "Through the music, he controls the flow of the performance and even leaves the piano to deliver one of the most touching and thought provoking numbers in the show," Anselmo said.

"The stories are about all of us," said National Public Radio, while Good Morning America said, "Robert Fulghum's stories withstand the test of time. He is the Will Rogers or Mark Twain of our day."

Among the examples of Fulghum’s “Kindergarten” creed: Share. Play Fair. Don’t hit People. Don’t take things that don’t belong to you. If you hurt someone, say you’re sorry. Clean up your own mess. Hold hands and stick together when you cross the street. Live a balanced life. Be aware of wonder.

The ensemble cast includes: Ashley Allen, Frank Bridgewater, James Bryan, Todd Cabrera, Glen Calhoun, John Cardaciotto, Tarin Chalifoux, Cadence Dickinson, Clayton Gage, Marsha Green, Ira Hsu, Guy Hutchinson, Tamara Jakub, Deena Jiles, Danielle Madera, Brady Niederer, Lyndsey Potosky, Nicole Russano, Sharon Seeman and Michelle Wood.

Tickets are $12 for adults, and $10 for seniors and students. Free parking is available next to the theatre. Kelsey Theatre is wheelchair accessible and provides assisted listening devices upon request.  Tickets may be ordered online or call the Kelsey Box Office at 609-584-9444.
