County Holocaust-Genocide Resource Center to Host Book Discussion
on "The Rape of Nanking" Feb. 16
Film to be Shown Feb. 22
Windsor, N.J. -- The Mercer County Holocaust/Genocide Resource will
host a book discussion on "The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten
Holocaust of World War II," to be held on Wednesday, February
16 at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will
be held in the Holocaust Center, located on the second floor of the
Library Building on MCCC's West
Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
primary focus of the discussion will be Iris Changs gripping
historical account of the atrocities committed by the Japanese in
1937-38 after their capture of Nanjing, the Chinese capital city.
Published in 1997, the book was a controversial bestseller; Chang
has been widely viewed as scholarly, exciting and passionate.
part of the discussion will be Takashi Yoshidas book, "The
Making of the Rape of Nanking," published in 2006. Praised
for its fair and thorough treatment of the events, the book meticulously
examines issues of ethics, nationality and historical identity related
to the massacre.
Professor Saul Goldwasser, Director of the Mercer County Holocaust/Genocide
Resource Center, notes, "We will look at the filters of national
and political interests that impact the maintenance of historical
records. We will also talk about bias in the media and in cultural
memory with regard to history, government, language arts, and sociology.
What is the appropriate response to atrocities of such magnitude?
How are subsequent generations expected to process events such as
these and incorporate them into their national identity?"
documentary film entitled "The Rape of Nanking"
will be shown at the Center the following week on Tuesday, February
22 at 1:00 p.m.
It is suggested that participants read the books prior to the discussion.
Both books and the film are available on reserve at the Center.
