MCCC Drama Students Present
Timeless Parables in “Godspell” April 21-29

“Godspell,” the rock musical that imparts the teachings of Jesus with an endearing comic twist, is coming to Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Theatre. MCCC drama students will perform this unique retelling of the gospel according to Matthew Fridays and Saturdays April 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is located on the college’s West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

A talented cast of ensemble players tells familiar biblical parables in a series of skits that possess a clown-like irreverence and wry humor, yet evoke the poignancy of Jesus’ sacrifice. First performed Off-Broadway in 1971, “Godspell” was conceived by John Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics -- those not supplied by the New Testament -- by Stephen Schwartz.

The ensemble cast of MCCC's "Godspell" includes:
first row, left to right, Michelle Wood and Rico Cineus; second row, Christina Melton and Alysia Toscano; third row, Kristina Mancini, Antonio Arzayus and Stephanie Bartolone; and
fourth row, David Hamm, Aaron Zeichner and Kyrus Westcott; back: Erik Rojas.

According to MCCC Drama program coordinator Jody Person, "The show conveys the message, 'love thy neighbor,' and then tells the audience how to do just that. There are 28 performers and every one does a great job." Person notes that the music draws from rock, folk, country and pop genres, including the international hit, “Day By Day,” as well as “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Save the People,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “Bless the Lord,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side."

The ensemble cast features: Ashley Allen, Antonio Arzayus, Stephanie Bartolone, Jennifer Brancato, Melanie Britten, Ricardo Cineus, Josiah DeAndrea, Peter Deane, Jennifer Fordyce, Damian Gaeta, Clayton Gage, David Hamm, Ira Hsu, Shauri Johnson, Kristina Mancini, Christina Melton, Brady Niederer, Roderick Pannel, Katie Proietti, Erik Rojas, Nicole Russano, Sara Smith, Cleveland Thompson, Alysia Toscano, Jon Turner, Kyrus Westcott, Michelle Wood, and Aaron Zeichner.

Tickets are $12 for adults, and $10 for seniors and students. Free parking is available next to the theatre. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling the Kelsey Box Office at 609-584-9444. Kelsey Theatre is wheelchair accessible and provides assisted listening devices upon request.
